A little bird told us about whispers of a new Square Enix RPG currently in the works. VG24/7 shared the story via Twitter only a few hours ago. Kotaku shared a link via the CS Blog earlier this morning. This appears to be an unofficial announcement from Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda regarding a “new role-playing game for home consoles that isn’t a remake” (Vincent, 2014).
While we can’t be sure what this new project is, we know what it isn’t. The Famitsu article––the supposed source of the rumor––explains that this new title will not be a new Final Fantasy title or anything we have seen from Square Enix before. The article also hints at a possible teaser or public announcement at the upcoming PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas, December 6-7th 2014.
This is incredibly exciting news. Any new Square Enix RPG would almost certainly be among the biggest next-gen releases of the new year. Matsuda also hinted at a slew of new titles coming from Square Enix in 2015, though no specifics have been revealed at this time. The Square Enix president would not comment as to whether these new games would be for home console or portable platforms.
Gaming fans around the world should keep an eye out for the Square Enix announcement in the coming weeks. It would be great to see something truly next-gen, unlike the horde of imitators and re-releases we’ve seen over the last few months. Whatever it is, there’s no one better than Square Enix to take on a next-gen RPG. Here’s hoping the announcement comes with something tangible to sink our teeth into.
Rumors will hopefully be confirmed with the release of this week’s issue of Famitsu.
