I’m sure that since the release in 2009, many of you have spent countless hours into League of Legends (LoL). I doubt that at the time of release even the publisher Riot Games expected LoL to be a great success. Currently, LoL is the most popular online multiplayer game and has even overtaken Blizzard’s flagship World of Warcraft in sheer player numbers. In it’s own genre, MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), LoL sets the bar extremely high for any current and upcoming MOBA titles.
Like you guys, I have also spent hundreds of hours playing LoL and still feel a strong urge to keep going. Most games become boring after a while, so why is it that League of Legends makes us want to keep playing? What keeps this game from becoming stale? Below I have tried to answer such questions based on my experience with the game.
I love the fact that all my friends are able to get together and enjoy the fun experience which LoL offers
One of the key and simple reasons why League of Legends has a massive following is due to its accessibility. Here, I am actually referring to graphics rather than gameplay. Some of you may argue that LoL’s graphics are outdated compared to some of the other MOBA games, however, LoL is a game that wants to be accessible to everyone and not only to players with mid to high range PCs. I love the fact that all my friends are able to get together and enjoy the fun experience which LoL offers, without having to worry about the graphics requirements. That being said, Riot Games have actually improved the graphics quite a bit since launch.
Another reason why League of Legends is so successful is because it offers you the ability to enjoy the game with your friends. As good as single player gaming experiences are, I personally feel that being able to play a game with your friends is just more enjoyable. LoL offers multiple game modes and each of these modes can be enjoyed with friends. Whether you are playing with only one of your friends or in a group, you will be able to experience LoL. Most games nowadays offer such functionality, however, I feel that the process of matchmaking in LoL is quick and easy. Teaming up with friends and finding a game generally takes under a minute.
Riot Games have been excellent in their maintenance for League of Legends. The constant updates and additions of new champions has kept LoL from becoming stale. All of us have that favorite champion we love to play with, however, this favorite changes often due to the plethora of champions currently available within LoL. Not only has LoL received a constant supply of champions, but over the years Riot Games have added new game modes to add some gameplay variety. Personally, I really enjoy the latest addition, the A.R.A.M mode. This is a 5 versus 5 (5v5) player mode with all players battling in a single lane. This map serves as a good distraction from the core 5v5 map.
Not only are players able to chose champions and modes, LoL also offers the ability to customize each character to your heart’s content. Players have access to Masteries and Runes which allows them to the ability to affect a champion’s play style during the game. New and more powerful Runes can be unlocked as players increase their summoner level. Summoner level is increased by playing LoL games and the max level is level 30.
To provide the players with a sense of achievement, there is ranked play. Ranked play is a great way for players to put their skills to the test and obtain an official ranking. This mode is best enjoyed with a team of players you are familiar with as coordination is key here. In order to play ranked games, players are required to reach the max summoner level of 30. This may seem like a lengthy process, but I feel that it is definitely needed. By the time a player reaches level 30, they manage to obtain a decent level of skill with regards to how the game should be played. The road ahead is still not simple and requires a lot of practice in order to be good.
As with any other online multiplayer experience, not everyone gets along in-game. Riot Games provides their players the ability to be part of “The Tribunal”. Players are able to log onto the League of Legends website and provide a ruling on the behavior of individuals during LoL games. A players’s ruling is not final, but based on the number of similar rulings received an individual’s status can be brought to the attention of the game’s administrators who then make the final decision.
Being the most played game in the world League of Legends has great support with regards to eSports. Multiple teams compete for the ultimate prize during many of the championships set out for LoL. Big money is involved in such tournaments with the prize pool reaching millions of dollars. Obviously, being a Pro LoL player is no easy task, it requires a lot practice and dedication. However, players can learn from Pro games which can either be watched live or found all over YouTube with some great commentary.
With League of Legends, the power is in the players’s hands
With League of Legends, the power is in the players’s hands. The player decides how the game should be played, who it should be played with, which character to play with, and even the setup of the character. This style of play may be offered by other games, however the level of customization offered by LoL is currently unmatched. Once you start playing LoL, you will keep coming back for more.
In the above paragraphs, I have tried to provide reasons as to why League of Legends is a great success. Players enjoy games where the game developer is as involved in the game as they are. Listening to player feedback and constantly improving the gaming experience clearly seems to be a recipe for success.
