After watching the Sony press conference for the last 2 hours or so, I have to admit, the future of PlayStation is…impressive! The press conference which lasted much longer and was much more detailed than I thought it would be left me excited for the PS4. Not only did they go into some of the specs of the new machine and how the new system would work, they also showed an impressive amount of games and some news that was fairly surprising.
PlayStation 4 is coming and it is more social
The event started off by verifying the name of the system as PS4, and then Sony presented the new Dualshock controller. This was the same controller that was reported by Destructiod last Thursday. Even though the console was not shown during the press conference, Sony shared some insight of the specs and explained what the focus and goal of the console is.
The specs mentioned were a supercharged PC Architecture, X86 CPU- 8 cores, Enhanced PC GPU – 2 teraflops, 8 GB RAM – GDDR5, and a local HDD. Sony did not specify on what sizes the local hard drives would be.
Sony is definitely pushing social integration
Sony is definitely pushing social integration. The console will have a DVR-like feature that will record your game session for easy uploading to friends and seamless sharing of content. You also will be able to watch your friend’s game session live.
A second chip in the system to allow for background uploading and downloading. This will include the ability to start downloading a game, then start playing it while it finishes the download in the background. They also placed an emphasis on the connectivity and support of the PSP Vita with the PS4. PS Vita will function like GamePad controller on the Wii U.
A showcase of several new games
An new IP from JapanStudios called Knack.
A gameplay demo of KillZone: Shadow Fall
Evolution Studio’s new racing game Drive Club.
Infamous: Second Son from Sucker Punch.
Capcom’s new IP “Deep Down” (Working Title)
They also showed a new demo for Watch Dogs and a video for Destiny from Bungie. This video included a little more gamplay than the Vidoc that came out a couple days ago. Destiny is coming to both PS3 and PS4 with exclusive content for the PS4 .Blizzard was also on hand to announce a partnership with Sony and that Diablo 3 is headed to PS3 and PS4.
Your move Microsoft.
Jonathan Blow (creator of Braid) announced that his new game The Witness would launch first on PS3. All in all it was a very successful conference for Sony. They did a great job getting out ahead of Microsoft and setting the bar pretty darn high. Your move Microsoft.
