MechWarrior Online is an upcoming competitive Mech Combat game being developed by Pirahhna Games.
I keep getting more excited about the potential for this game the more I learn about it.
From what I can tell it aims to faithfully reproduce the bombastic and strategic combat of the classic Mech Warrior series and intertwine it with modern sensibilities.
I have been a huge fan of the Mech Warrior Universe since I was a child and the family computer had to be upgraded with a whopping 4MB of RAM to run Mech Warrior 2′s intro movie smoothly.
What sets Mech Warrior apart from other “giant robot” games (of which there are many) is it’s complex and rewarding simulation of the astonishingly massive yet believable walking tanks known as Mechs.
Each Mech is many tons and shakes the earth beneath it with each step. It can unleash a hellfire barrage at the push of a button but it is forever a slave to it’s own internal heat.
Too much accumulated heat and it shuts down leaving you a sitting duck. You are disabled and vulnerable on the battlefield until it cools down.
Successfully maintaining you heat generation while trying to line up shots, remember weapon groupings and outmaneuver your opponent is to this day one of the most satisfying challenges of multitasking I’ve ever seen in a game.
The Developer’s blog recently released a lengthy description of what it will be like to pilot a Mech, everything I read sounds very promising but I’ll let you be the judge.
Below is the first and only legitimate screen shot of the game I’ve seen thus far.
MechWarrior Online is an online only PvP game not to be confused with the other Mech game under development, MechWarrior Tactics, which looks promising in it’s own right.
