Battlefield 3 is the sixth game in the Battlefield series…..ok, not exactly, but there’s a little more than 3, and if you count Bad Company, it’s also not exactly the third installment in the series either. However, this game ended up to be Battlefield 3, and it’s been anticipated by a lot of people, especially those who feel like they are sick of Modern Warfare.
Alright, to be fair, there are things to like in this game. At least, when you’re talking about the multiplayer. With the multiplayer, the matches are fun, intense, and exciting…..for the most part. Oh, and there’s also a singleplayer campaign.
The Clear Focus of this Game

Dude! Open your parachute!
It’s obvious that the main focus in this game is the multiplayer. I even know people who haven’t even touched the singleplayer campaign because they like the multiplayer so much. Battlefield 3 is a really involving game and the game’s level progression and rewards will keep you coming back. What’s more, the multiplayer really shines if you’re willing to invest some time into it.
Team work is what’s emphasized in this game, which makes it a little more unique than other shooters.
Team work is what’s emphasized in this game, which makes it a little more unique than other shooters. You’ll have an asset of skills that will help benefit your team like med packs, ammo packs, packs that climb on rocks, and so on. So, even if you aren’t shooting up bad guys, you can still make yourself useful by just healing team mates or reviving them, and you’ll still be really high on the scoreboard just by doing that.
The online battles are really intense. You’ll find yourself ducking behind cover, coordinating with your team, and even running away trying to survive explosions. Seriously, each time I was getting bombarded by missiles, I felt like I was in the new Mission Impossible movie. So, there’s really hardly a dull moment in the multiplayer……..but, there are a lot of annoyances though.
Things That Didn’t Quite Work
Battlefield 3 can be really frustrating. Especially on the larger scale battles. I guess it has something to do with my play style, but there were a lot of times I wanted to throw my keyboard out the window. Through out all of the matches, I always felt like I was getting killed in every possible dumb way.
Like I said, it probably reflects on how well I play the game, but this game can get really chaotic though. Like, really badly. It’s seriously a multiplayer kind of game where anything goes. You have your tanks over ruling the battlefield while most of the infantry stands helpless, Snipers can easily have an advantage over everyone if they find the right place, and throw in a couple of jets that can drop bombs everywhere and you have a jumbled mess with too many things going on.
Ok, that’s really my only complaint about the multiplayer, because there are things to like as well.
Things That Are More Welcomed
In addition to beautiful environments and details that are worth bragging about, team work plays a big part in this game and it’s one of the reasons why it’s one of the better multiplayer games. Your team is seriously nothing without teamwork. Sure, the games can be a bit clustered, but if you work together, you can turn the tide of battle.
This is helped by the fact that you can join squads where each squad can do their own separate thing. You can squad next to other squad members, making it easier to get into the midst of battle and to help out.
Vehicles play a big part in this game as well. I think they can be a bit overpowered though, but they are fun none of the less. It was cool on more than one occasion to just go around in a tank mowing down bad guys. Also, YOU GET TO FLY FREAKING JETS! Ok, it’s not really that exciting, for one thing, they can be pretty difficult to control, but seeing others fly it, they can be pretty much the masters of the skies…..and the battlefield.

VVVVVVVVRRRROOOOOOMMMMM!!!!
The thing is, the multiplayer is fun, and I’d say it really depends on how much time your willing to invest in it for the experience. It’s definitely what they focused on in the game, so if your going to buy it, buy it for the multiplayer. The singleplayer on the other hand……
Obviously Not the Main Focus of the Game
The singleplayer is seriously a shining example of what they were focusing on in the game, or what they weren’t focusing on. The one word that seriously comes to mind when talking about the campaign in this game is mediocre. Seriously! It has to be one of the most boring single player experiences I’ve ever played.
The big problem is that it seems like they just wanted to take everything Call of Duty did and just put it in their own game. The story, the set pieces, there’s even a death from above type mission that was also from Call of Duty 4.
Another Sinister Plot
This game involves terrorists(because what modern warfare game doesn’t?) and they’ve gotten a hold of some big time explosives, or nukes to be more accurate. And it’s up to you and a bunch of other hard-headed soldiers to save the day.
The game is made up of set pieces, which is really the only thing the story really has it going for. There are explosions, snipers, and even quick time events in a desperate attempt to keep you from falling asleep. Though, I do have to admit, there was actually this one even that was actually pretty cool where a jet kept on making passes and I had to find cover in order to survive. Ok, it only made up 5 minutes out of the entire experience of this game, but it’s at least worth something.
it’s pretty clear they were mainly working on a multiplayer game
Also, to be fair, the gunplay in Battlefield 3 does work well and the game flows smoothly as long as you aren’t playing on the hard difficulty. The controls are nice and it keeps everything working well. But the problem is, the singleplayer is just boring. There is seriously nothing special about it. The sad thing is, I was actually kind of excited for this part of the game, because they actually did market the campaign in its trailers and showed off how cool it was going to be. But, in the end, it’s pretty clear they were mainly working on a multiplayer game. In Battlefield 3 DICE may have not delivered a memorable story, but luckily it is only a minor let down.

He couldn't believe he got stuck in this game!
The Explosive Finale
In the end, if you have any interest in these warfare games and multiplayer in particular…..then you probably have already bought the game. If your still on the fence of whether or not you should get, it depends on how much time your willing to invest in the multiplayer aspect of it. It can be a really fun game in the multiplayer. On the other hand though, do NOT get this game for the singleplayer. If your curious about it, you can rent it, but don’t buy it for the campaign, it’s seriously not worth your money. With that said, the multiplayer is solid and I do recommend checking it out just for that.
8 out of 10
Why so high? A fun multiplayer experience involving team work and action
Why so low? Hollow, almost non-existant single-player experience, the multiplayer can get a bit chaotic at times.
